Voice of Our Shadow - Jonathan Carroll
Don't annoy a magician. Joe Lennox does, and lives to regret it.
Acquiring a Jonathan Carroll book that I haven't read is definitely a red letter day. Unfortunately my collection suffers from a number of gaps. So it was with great anticipation that I picked up Gollancz Fantasy Masterworks #25, Jonathan Carroll's second novel after his brilliant first novel The Land of Laughs. Most recently, he has written a loosely connected trilogy Kissing the Beehive, Marriage of Sticks & The Wooden Sea. His next novel White Apples came out in Hardback a few days ago.

American Joe Lennox feels guilty about the death of his brother Ross, and to some extent he is hiding from the memories by living in Vienna. It is there that he meets a real-life magician (occult, not TV-type) with extraordinary powers, Paul Tate and his artistic wife, India. Gradually, the Tates become an essential part of Joe's life; and tragically, he finds himself falling in love with India. The moral of the story is don't annoy a gifted magician, but I will leave it up to you to find out why.

Jonathan Carroll is a very gifted author who creates believable characters in bizarre situations seemingly in every book. Voice of Our Shadow is no exception. If you enjoy subtle fantasy horror, then this book is for you.
